Fuel and charging calculator What does your driving actually cost?

Estimate monthly and annual gas or EV charging costs using your commute, other weekly driving, vehicle efficiency, and local gas or electricity prices. Compare gasoline and electric driving costs for the same annual mileage and see the estimated cost per mile.

At these prices and efficiencies, electric driving costs about $904 less per year than gas.

Understand your fuel and charging estimate

Learn how vehicle efficiency becomes an estimated energy cost and why real-world results may differ.

Why can real fuel or electricity use differ from this estimate?

Real energy use can vary with:

  • Weather
  • Driving speed and style
  • Traffic
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Vehicle load
  • City and highway driving
  • Real-world vehicle efficiency

What does MPGe mean in this calculation?

MPGe is an energy-equivalency efficiency measure used for electric vehicles. Beanios converts MPGe to electricity use using 33.7 kWh as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline.

Does this compare the full cost of a gas car and an EV?

No. It compares estimated energy costs only. It does not compare:

  • Vehicle purchase price
  • Insurance
  • Maintenance
  • Tires
  • Depreciation
  • Incentives
  • Charging-equipment installation
  • Parking or tolls

Definitions and assumptions

Commute distance
The one-way distance between home and work. Beanios doubles it for a round trip.
Other driving
Miles driven outside your commute, including errands, school trips, weekends, and longer personal drives.
MPG
Miles traveled per gallon of gasoline. A higher MPG uses less fuel for the same trip.
MPGe
Miles per gallon equivalent, the efficiency number shown for electric vehicles. Beanios converts MPGe to electricity use using 33.7 kWh as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline.

About this fuel and charging estimate

Review what is included, what is excluded, and how annual driving is calculated.

What is included

Commute mileage, other weekly driving, fuel economy or EV efficiency, and the energy price you enter.

What is excluded

Insurance, maintenance, tires, parking, tolls, depreciation, charging losses, and differences between city and highway efficiency.

How it works

Annual commute miles use your round trip, commute days, and commute weeks. Other weekly driving is multiplied by 52.
